Honuaʻula Forest Reserve
Just a stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of Kailua Kona town is the beautiful and lush Honuaʻula Forest Reserve at the near top of Kaloko Drive. To get to Kaloko Drive, follow Palani Road northward about ten minutes until you reach Kaloko Drive, and then make a right. You will follow Kaloko Drive until you almost reach the top, winding and snaking through all of its many hills and turns.
The public entrance to the Honuaʻula Forest Reserve is on Makahi Street (left), where there will be a small parking area. At the end of the guard rail is the trail and the Forest Reserve sign, which leads to many miles of looping and out and back forest trails through this Reserve.
Be aware that the weather is always changing in the Cloud Forest. What can begin as a beautiful day can become a thick fog to a heavy rain in what may seem like moments. Hikers should be prepared with food, water, sturdy shoes, and trail knowledge. The trail network is mostly unmarked, so it is important to know where you came from. Always remember to stay on the trail and leave no trace.
